Before Marriage Medical Check in Saudi Arabia
Going for medical check before marriage caused a state of controversy among the Saudi youth, while some youth accept the idea, other refused it. The competent authorities in Saudi Arabia are conducting awareness campaigns to acquaint Saudi citizens with the significance and usefulness of such medical checks.
Before marriage medical checks involve taking specimen of the couples planning to get married, specimens would be analyzed to confirm that the children would not suffer any hereditary diseases, if analysis results are positive, the youth planning to get married would be given some alternatives to take, if the results are negative in the sense that the couples or any one of them is free of disease, the marriage will be safe, marriage involves risk when both the couples are infected with hereditary disease, or when one of them is infected while the other is only a carrier.
In the same context, studies conducted on that issue revealed 70% of the non-matching cases in Makkah refused to get married due to some hereditary diseases while 30% refused to believe in the results and insisted to get married.
Doctors pointed that main hereditary diseases meant are some diseases causing delay and misshaping of bone growth, swelling in spleen, whole body fatigue and anemia, others type of hereditary disease is sickle cell anemia which cause red blood cell to change its shape Instead of being flexible and round, these cells are more rigid and curved in the shape of the farm tool known as a sickle - that's where the disease gets its name. The shape is similar to a crescent moon.
It is worth mentioning that 1000 Saudi children have blood cancer, "leukemia" every year, which is the most common type of cancer in the region as 20% of the cancer patients have leukemia, other 80% of the cancer patients have other types of cancer such as lymph gland cancer and brain tumors.
