 Organization of the Islamic Conference


The Organization of the Islamic Conference is made up of 57 member states and international organizations working together to protect their interests and insure prosperity for their nations and for all the Muslims around the world.

The Organization of the Islamic Conference was founded in Rabat, Kingdom of Morocco on Rajab 12, 1389 corresponding to September 25, 1969, during the First Conference of the Muslim World Leaders held there after the aggressive fire of the Al-Aqsa Mosque on August 21, 1969 by some Jewish terrorists, the assault represented an explicit violation to Muslim sacred places of worshipping, to their dignity and religion. The whole world condemned the crime. The Muslim leaders meeting in Rabat reaffirmed their unity, unified their word and summoned all powers to encounter the Jewish terrorist aggression. The charter of the Organization of the Islamic Conference calls for using all political and military means to liberate the Holy Quds from the Jewish occupation.

Six month later, The first session of Islamic Foreign Ministers took place in March 1970 in Saudi city of Jeddah during which the formation of OIC secretariat was approved, its main duty was to coordinate between the member states, the Secretary General was appointed and it was decided to take Jeddah as its temporary headquarter till the Quds is liberated.

In Muharam 1392 corresponding to February 1972, the 3rd Session of the Islamic Conference of the Foreign Ministers approved the Charter of the Organization of the Islamic Conference.

The Charter identified the objectives of the Organization of the Islamic Conference as follows:
a.  To promote Islamic solidarity among Member States.
b.  To consolidate cooperation among Member States in the economic, social, cultural, scientific and other vital fields of activities.
c.  To back the struggle of all Muslim people with a view to preserving their dignity, independence and national rights;
d.  To coordinate efforts for the safeguarding of the Holy Places.
e.  To support the struggle of the people of Palestine, to help them regain their rights and liberate their land;
f. Endeavor to eliminate racial segregation, discrimination and to eradicate colonialism in all its forms;
g. To create a suitable atmosphere for the promotion of cooperation and understanding among Member States and other countries.

Principles: The Member States decide and undertake that, in order to realize the objectives mentioned in the previous paragraph, they shall be inspired and guided by the following principles:
1)  Total equality between Member States;
2)  Respect of the right of self-determination, and non-interference in the domestic affairs of Member States;
3)  Respect of the sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of each Member State;
4)  Settlement of any conflict that may arise by peaceful means such as negotiation, mediation, reconciliation or arbitration;
5)  Abstention from the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity, national unity or political independence of any Member State.
